Outdoor Bohemian Chic

Grumpy's Garden

Brief: to create a fully landscaped ’statement’ outdoor living and entertaining space in the corner plot garden of this redeveloped 1930s house in Bramall, south Manchester.

Our client Nick, whose house we also completely redeveloped, wanted to complete this major refurbishment project with a sweeping front and side garden landscaping scheme which, in turn, would take family and guests into the rear garden complete with an outdoor eating, cooking and entertaining space.

Nick’s love for the great outdoors, woods and trees is clearly evident both in and outside his house.  The design scheme is big on large statement blocks of wood, with reclaimed sleepers for borders, chunky block wood stepping stones across a pond, and a cooking and eating area housed under a sloping wooden shack with a live organic roof.

The overall look and feel is generous, big hearted and expansive.  You get a real sense of being outdoors in a design that feels bold and robust, yet warm and welcoming.  A few steps over the pond from the alfresco dining area and you find yourself ready to relax in an outdoor lounge area, featuring all weather rattan settees and chairs.  A mix of formal Japanese style planting and more relaxed borders around the lawn create a pleasing mix of light, shade and texture – adding an air of sophistication to an outdoor living space which exudes style and confidence.

Big, bold and distinctive Nick’s outdoor living areas form a natural extension to the organic wood feel that is evident in the main reception rooms of his house, and his personal retreat space which features a full height woodland forest wallcovering.
